Composer, artist, multi-instrumentalist, and Weird Cry Records proprietor Rob Magill’s latest offering is a pair of lamentations recorded during the lockdown in 2020. From his home in Ojai, CA Magill recorded “The Beast of Our Nation” and “Tired Times” over a four-month period. To complete these pieces, Magill played, performed, and composed with over 20 instruments.
The first composition, “The Beast of Our Nation,” encapsulates the sound of a time and place. It is a piece inspired by the mental and emotional turmoil of 2020 as it matches the sound of bewilderment and mourning in our new normal. Magill’s knack for painting with sound and instrumentation is on full display with "The Beast of Our Nation." Meanwhile, “Tired Times,” unfurls with subtle determination and was composed, according to Magill, for the light touch of sadness he sensed within the cosmos. With these two pieces, Magill traffics in the sounds of now by creating an unruly salve for these beastly and tired times.
