about

Evan Zierk is a Brooklyn-based composer guided by instilling a desire to listen deeply – to listen closer. Drifting/Bending, Zierk’s first collection of new music, is a fitting opening statement to spark such a listen. Comprised of four delicate and textured pieces, the collection unfolds in incalculable and elegant ways. “Bending” immediately seduces with a barrage of phasing arpeggiated tones that unravel and retract as longtime collaborator Nate Mendelsohn’s alto saxophone patiently grounds the piece. Tonal micro melodies shift, unfurl, and combine with pace and an ecstatic beauty. “Drifting”, the album opener, takes shape over an evolving electronic pulse as tiny planets of sound come in and out, slowly stretching the music into its own small galaxy. Dissonance is always lurking, but never takes center stage. Drifting/Bending is also a product of collaboration as Mendelsohn and opera singer Natasha Thweat both contribute written and improvised material throughout these four pieces.

Drifting/Bending is the seventh release on Atlantic Rhythms, a label releasing deep, contemporary music on limited-run cassettes paired with hand-screened artwork.
